Chasing Waterfalls in Cebu: Kawasan

The second item on my itinerary is the famous Kawasan Falls in Badian. Located about 130 kilometers south of Cebu City, Badian is a third class municipality in the 2nd Congressional District of Cebu with a population of roughly 38,000. This sleepy town is home to Kawasan Falls located inside the mountains of Barangay Matutinao.
The falls can easily be reached by bus and a short trek of about 10-20 minutes or habal-habal ride from the national road. Getting to the falls is easy since there are several signages pointing to its location and the road leading to it is flat so no hiking really. The falls can also be reached by trekking 4 hours from Osmeña Peak in Dalaguete as this sits right at the foot of Mantalungon Mountain Range. An entrance fee of P10.00 is collected at the site but tourists coming from Osmeña Peak can enter free of charge.

The Falls at Kawasan are a three-tiered cascade falls fed by crystal clear mountain springs and situated in the midst of a lush setting of tropical plants and trees. I suppose this is the reason why it was included in Travel & Leisure Magazine's list of most beautiful falls in the world.

If you thirst for more splash, you can take a dip and continue beating the heat in Matutinao Beach just a few steps away from the jump-off point to Kawasan Falls. This pristine white sand beach has a great view of the island of Negros and access to this is free, though the care takers charge tourists for the use of huts and cottages.

How to get there:

From Cebu City Kawasan Falls can be reached by bus at Cebu South Bus Terminal. 3 to 4 hours of travel is all it takes to reach Barangay Matutinao where the falls is. Tourists would need to hike 15 to 30 minutes from the national road to Kawasan Falls. The riverbank along with many bridges lead to the very heart of Kawasan Falls. Tourists can also opt for tour packages which include pick up & drop off from Cebu City/Mactan in a private air-conditioned transportation at a slightly higher cost.
