The town of Oslob is a fourth class municipality in the province of Cebu and is home to about 30,000 people. Oslob shares distinction with Donsol, Sorsogon as the only two destinations in the Philippines where tourists can swim with whale sharks, locally known as butanding - the largest known extant species of fish which weigh as much as 30 tons and swim in open waters of the tropical oceans.
Whale shark watching in Oslob began only in September 2011 and saw a steady rise in popularity when it was featured on the Internet (as was the case with other lesser-known-turned-famous-tourist-spots). During peak seasons, the number of sightseers descending each day on Oslob reaches 1,500, a big boost to the local economy which relies heavily on tourism.
Swimming with whale sharks is a must for tourists coming to south Cebu as this is not your usual everyday adventure. Just the thought of swimming with sharks gives you a different kind of thrill, so if you want to take on this adventure, hop on that bus bound for Bato plying Oslob and drop-off at Barangay Tan-awan in Oslob.
Tan-awan is host to several diving resorts which offer whale shark watching tours at a uniform price, set by the municipal government.
